Sugar-Free Diet Plan For HealthExcess sugar consumption is often the reason for several health conditions such as obesity and heart disease. Refined sugars are known to be fast-digesting carbohydrates, which are converted quickly to fat; whereas, complex carbohydrates digest slowly and provide you with a consistent source of energy. Therefore, it is important that you limit the amount of sugar in your diet. Given below is an effective sugar free diet plan.

Sugar-Free Diet Plan

Include Vegetables

Vegetables are excellent for those who suffer from high blood sugar as they are sugar-free. They possess high amounts of complex carbohydrates and fibre, which are beneficial for health. It is advisable that you cook vegetables at home and avoid purchasing packaged food products as they often contain added sugars.

Sugar-Free Diet Plan

Vegetables that are sugar-free include spinach, kale, collard greens, tomato, onion, asparagus, broccoli and yam. It is advisable that you include vegetables at every meal as they also contain high amounts of fibre and water, thereby preventing binge eating.

Include Meat and Dairy Products

Meat is considered an excellent food for those who want to reduce the amount of sugar in their diet. This is because meat possesses no refined sugar and provides you with the essential amino acids as well as vitamins and minerals required for good health.

Chicken breast, fish, lean beef and turkey are excellent sources of animal protein that are sugar-free. Dairy products are also sugar-free and good for individuals suffering from diabetes. However, it is important that you purchase only unflavoured dairy products, which do not contain any added sugar.

Best dairy products that do contain refined sugars include yogurt, cottage cheese and milk. You could also add berries or any other fruit to yogurt for added flavour.

Include Fruits and Whole Grains

Fruits are one of the best foods for those suffering from high blood sugar as they do not contain any added sugar. Fruits are known to possess complex carbohydrates, which digest very slowly and are good for diabetics. Fruits that do not contain refined sugar include blueberries, grapes, kiwi, raspberries, strawberries, banana, mango and apricots.

Diet Plan For Health

You should avoid purchasing packaged fruit juices as they contain high amounts of added sugars. Instead, you should drink fruit juice prepared at home by juicing the whole fruit itself. Whole grains are also considered sugar-free and contain high amounts of complex carbohydrates.

In addition to complex carbohydrates, whole grains also possess good amounts of fibre, which help in digestion. Sugar-free whole grains include oats, bran, wheat, brown rice and millet.

Include Legumes

Legumes are considered excellent for those on a sugar-free diet. This is due to the fact that legumes possess negligible amounts of refined sugar. In addition to that, they contain high amounts of complex carbohydrates and fibre, which help in regulating the levels of blood sugar and promoting smooth digestion.

Common examples of sugar-free legumes include lima beans, pinto beans, black-eyed peas, chickpeas and kidney beans. If you experience bloating because of eating legumes, you should soak boiled beans in cold water for a few seconds and drop them in hot water for a few seconds.

Is Wikipedia 'done'? It's close, says historian

5 hrs.

The suggestion that Wikipedia may be as complete as it's ever going to be caused a stir over the weekend. But can a community-edited encyclopedia ever really be "done"?

An in-depth article by historian and Wikipedia editor Richard Jensen describes how the Wikipedia entry for the War of 1812 exemplifies the approaching completeness of the online encyclopedia. Posts at The Atlantic and Slashdot attracted significant discussion.

In the early days of that war's Wikipedia?entry, it was being edited dozens of times a?day by a dedicated group?of history buffs. Now hardly anything has changed in years. And it's not just the War of 1812 that's fallen off in activity. The overall edit rate on thousands of articles has slowed to a trickle as the major events, people, and concepts in history are covered more or less comprehensively.

As Jensen points out, there are a finite number of things about which one can write:

After an encyclopedia reaches 100,000 articles, the pool of good material shrinks. By the time one million articles are written, it must tax ingenuity to think of something new. Wikipedia passed the four million article mark in summer 2012.

Certainly there is still much to be done: Localization of articles to other languages, for instance. And there will likely continue to be "edit wars" on controversial articles like political figures and current events. But?it appears that the goal of providing a respectable reference?for the topics most likely to be needed by students and curious?visitors has been met.

What's next, then? The Wikimedia Foundation, which runs Wikipedia and associated sites, seems to be focusing on usability and new features for the site, which has not changed much in years. Users' increasing reliance on mobile devices means portability is important; hence the new?ability to export articles as e-books. The foundation is?also looking at extending what Wikipedia is used for by hosting textbooks, courses, and other secondary resources.

Jensen's article, which appeared in the Journal of Military History,?can be downloaded in PDF form here.

East tennis falls at No. 3 Panther Creek
But several Wildcats continue in individual tournament

CARY - For Panther Creek?s young, but talented tennis team this could just be the beginning of a very successful run.The Catamounts, with four freshmen at the top of the order, blasted perennial state power East Chapel Hill 5-1 Tuesday afternoon in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A dual team playoffs.East coach Ann Booterbaugh knew her team lost to a good opponent.?We came ready, expecting a tough match. We knew we had to play well. They gave 100 percent and that?s all they could do. I?m proud of them,? Booterbaugh said of her players.Gan, a ninth-grader and the only Wildcat to win her singles against Panther Creek last week, finished her season at 16-0.East Chapel Hill won the PAC Six Conference (again) this fall without losing to a league opponent, but the Wildcats lost 5-4 to Panther Creek in a non-conference match in late season. By season?s end, Panther Creek (19-1) was ranked No. 3 in the state by prep coaches, and East Chapel Hill (16-3) was No. 5, having lost only to No. 1 Broughton and Panther Creek.?The girls felt good about the season for many reasons,? Booterbaugh said. ?We were 16-3, only losing to two top teams. They also really bonded and had fun with each other away from the court as well. It was a great group of girls and most are returning. All who are returning are strong players and will help the team next year.?East will graduate Brittany Hill, the team?s No. 1 player, but will return Nos. 2-7 in singles: sophomore Caroline Pope (2); ninth-grader Rainie Heck (3); juniors Mackenzie Bright (4) and Meghana Holegadde (5); Gan (6); Kiri Schulz (7); plus Corey Risinger and Cate Bahner. After qualifying for the NCHSAA individual tournament, Heck and Holegadde lost in the regionals. East?s doubles teams of Hill-Pope and Gan-Schulz lost in the second round, just short of advancing to this weekend?s championships.Panther Creek this week will host Broughton, which handed the Catamounts their only loss.Tuesday?s win by Panther Creek came with junior Megan Smith, the team?s usual No. 1 player, on the sidelines with an injury. With Megan Smith out, her younger sister freshman Sammi Smith played No. 1 and freshmen Jordan Strickland, Orla Labiche, and Loren Kim filled the top spots. All four won their matches in straight sets.?Megan lost in the other match against East Chapel Hill and I know she was disappointed at not getting to play, but today we played like the team we have, the team we are. It was good to see us come alive,? Catamounts coach Nathaniel Blalock said.?This team is getting better every match and we only lose one senior out of out top seven so I?m hoping we can only get better.Carrboro hosts TuesdayCarrboro, the top seed from the Carolina 12 Conference, beat Tarboro 5-4 last week. The Jaguars (15-3) will host Swansboro (18-2) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.Elsewhere, Chapel Hill ended its tennis season at 11-7 after falling at undefeated (17-0) Nash Central, 6-0 in the NCHSAA?s first round. Humane Society International and Costa Rican ... - Costa Rica News

SAN JOS?, Costa Rica (Oct. 22, 2012) ?Humane Society International- Latin America and the Servicio Nacional de Salud Animal (SENASA), the Costa Rican animal health service, celebrated the signing of an agreement to join together to work for improved animal welfare standards.

?In recent years, SENASA has become increasingly involved in the fight against dogfighting, an activity which oftentimes involves the sale of drugs and the arms possession. Its latest raid resulted in the seizure of 23 dogs, with two American Pit Bull Terriers that come from bloodlines associated with international dogfighting operations. The agreement aims to formalize and strengthen the collaboration between SENASA and Humane Society International, which will be implemented through awareness campaigns and training with international experts on topics such as responsible pet ownership, animal cruelty report management and welfare of production animals,? said German Rojas, director of SENASA.

?Our collaboration with SENASA will allow us to more effectively work with Costa Rican authorities to crack down on animal fighting and promote animal welfare in general,? said Cynthia Dent, regional director for HSI-Latin America. ?Humane Society International is very excited about this groundbreaking partnership.?

Following the official signing, HSI and SENASA held their first joint training session with personnel from SENASA and law enforcement receiving training to adequately deal with cockfighting and dogfighting, including investigating and breaking up animal fighting operations.

Animal welfare is a global issue, and one of increasing relevance in developing countries, where governmental institutions and NGO?s are key players. It is because of this that SENASA is entering this partnership with HSI, an international organization with over 50 years of experience in the field of animal welfare. This collaboration can become the cornerstone of a new era of improved animal health, welfare and public veterinary health.

Priorities USA Will Focus on Romney?s Bain Record in Closing Stretch

Priorities USA Action, the chief Democratic super PAC supporting President Obama, will close out the campaign season by reprising a television ad about a man who lost his job as a result of decisions made by Bain Capital while Republican nominee Mitt Romney ran it.

The super PAC ran $20 million in ads throughout the summer to highlight the negative impact of layoffs at companies that were shuttered during Romney?s tenure as head of the venture capital firm. In focus groups with Ohio voters this week, Priorities determined that the most effective ad of the campaign was ?Stage,? in which Mike Earnest talks about building a stage from which company officials announced the termination of his job.

?Turns out that when we built that stage it was like building my own coffin, and it just made me sick,? Earnest says in the ad.

?Participants were able to describe it in detail and recall the emotional impact it had on them, despite the fact that it had not run in that market for over six weeks,? Priorities said in a memo about its closing strategy.

The group will pour millions of dollars into re-running the ad in seven swing states: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, Virginia and Wisconsin. It will also run a slate of new ads that feature similar personal stories, which will complement a separate $30 million ad buy that seeks to portray Republican policies in a negative light. On top of television advertising, the group is launching what it terms an ?aggressive? online effort to target voters who are more engaged on the Internet than through TV advertising.

?From now until Election Day, we will make sure that voters understand that Mitt Romney?s promise to apply his business experience to Washington would mean policies that benefit the very wealthiest like himself at the expense of middle-class families,? the memo reads. ?The Americans best equipped to share that story are those who have already heard Romney?s broken promises and experienced the devastating impact.?

Independent polling conducted by news organizations over the summer was split on whether the personal attacks against Romney?s record at Bain worked. But Priorities released internal polling in July conducted by a Democratic firm that showed the GOP nominee?s favorability declining in five key battleground states where its ads had run.

Attorneys release confidential Boy Scouts files on alleged child sex ...

Posted on: 1:52 pm, October 18, 2012, by David Wells, updated on: 08:59am, October 19, 2012

By Michael Martinez and Paul Vercammen

(CNN) ? More than 20,000 confidential Boy Scout documents were released Thursday identifying more than 1,000 leaders and volunteers banned from the group after being accused of sexual or inappropriate conduct with boys.

The public release of the Scouts? 1,247 ?ineligible volunteer files? from 1965 to 1985 does not identify the boy victims and witnesses. The national files are being distributed with the approval of the Oregon Supreme Court by a law firm that won an $18.5 million judgment in 2010 against the Boy Scouts in a case where a Scoutmaster sexually abused a boy.

Wayne Perry, president of Boy Scouts of America, said the group is deeply committed to youth protection, but he acknowledged that in some cases, the organization?s responses to allegations of abuse by volunteers ?were plainly insufficient, inappropriate or wrong.?

?Where those involved in Scouting failed to protect, or worse, inflicted harm on children, we extend our deepest and sincere apologies to victims and their families,? Perry said in a statement issued Wednesday evening. ?While it is difficult to understand or explain individuals? actions from many decades ago, today Scouting is a leader among youth-serving organizations in preventing child abuse.?

The Boy Scouts opposed the release of the internal records and said their confidentiality has encouraged prompt reporting of questionable behavior and privacy for victimized boys and their families.

?While we respect the court, we are still concerned that the release of two decades? worth of confidential files into public view, even with the redactions indicated, may still negatively impact victims? privacy and have a chilling effect on the reporting of abuse,? the organization said.

The Scouts also released a September report from a University of Virginia psychiatry professor, Janet Warren, who concluded that the system ?has functioned well in keeping many unfit adults out of Scouting.?

But the attorneys representing victims in several lawsuits against the Scouts say the group hid evidence from the public and police and that the so-called perversion files offer insight into what they deem a serious problem in the organization.

The secrecy protected more than 1,000 suspected child molesters, said the attorneys, who publicly released the documents during a news conference at a hotel in downtown Portland, Oregon. The attorneys are also seeking the release of post-1985 files from the Boy Scouts.

The files show that the expelled Scout leaders and volunteers ? all men ? ?are sociopathic geniuses,? said attorney Kelly Clark of Portland, who has reviewed the 20,000 pages and is among the attorneys releasing the papers Thursday.

?They fool everybody,? he said. ?And then they are able to coerce, convince or threaten these kids to stay silent. And you see that play out over and over again in the files.?

Clark said he represents more than 100 men who as children were in the Boy Scouts, and he estimates that more than 50% of his clients have drug or alcohol problems. At least three of them have committed suicide, he said.

Tim Kosnoff, an attorney in Seattle, said the abuse allegedly inflicted on the men as boys ?has a corrosive effect? in which trust, relationship and sexuality issues develop with adulthood.

One former Boy Scout represented by Kosnoff, Keith Early, joined the group at 12, recruited by an assistant Scoutmaster who was a married firefighter with three children and led Scout meetings in a church in Washington state.

Early, now 18, was sexually abused by the Scout leader while helping build a Boy Scout camp on his 42-acre ranch, he said in an interview with CNN. The assistant Scoutmaster was convicted of abusing Early and another boy and is now serving a prison sentence of 10 years to life.

?I felt like I was all alone,? Early said. ?Just thinking about it makes me angry ? because how could you do that to somebody? How could you bring yourself to do that to somebody who is so innocent and has done nothing wrong??

The number of files started each year ranged from 25 to 75 at a time when about 5 million Scouts and volunteers were active, according to Warren?s report. In most cases, ?police, courts and public were aware of the information in the files,? and 58% ?included information known to the public.?

There were ?a small number of files where an alleged offender was allowed back into Scouting after offending,? often after psychiatric treatment, ?those cases were extraordinarily rare,? wrote Warren, who was an expert witness for the Boy Scouts during the court case.

Tim Hale, a Santa Barbara, California, attorney who?s representing allegedly abused Scouts who are now adults, said the released documents could provide information about possible pedophiles.

?We?re talking about hundreds, if not thousands, of unidentified men who should be registered sex offenders who are roaming free in society, free to volunteer with other youth organizations, to work at schools and that sort of thing,? Hale said.

The Boy Scouts disputes that characterization of their files.

In a September 20 statement released by the Boy Scouts, Warren rebutted the characterization that the documents were ?secret files of hidden abuse? by pedophiles.

?The files show a significant amount of public knowledge of the offenders and their unlawful acts. For example, over 60% of the files being made available to the public include some kind of public information. These public domain sources included newspaper articles, police reports, criminal justice records, and records of civil litigation. The majority of men in the files were arrested at some point in their lives for a sex crime,? Warren wrote.

The files are also ?very limited in their ability to answer important research questions about sexual abuse,? she said.

?While some have attempted to categorize these files as a ?treasure trove? of information about pedophiles and their actions, that simply is not the case,? Warren said. ?These files tell us precisely what researchers already knew, and have known for many years: some small number of men will use a position of trust and access to young people to pursue illegal sexual gratification. This is a sad reality that has been with us throughout human history.?

The Boy Scouts say they have improved their youth protection policies the past decade and have initiated such practices as third-party, computerized background checks on all new adult volunteers. Also, at least two adults are present at all scouting activities, the group said.

The Scouts, founded by congressional charter in 1910, instituted character reference checks for Scoutmasters in 1911 and, by the 1920s, began using an ineligible volunteers list deemed not having ?the moral, emotional or character values for membership,? the group said.

In June, the Oregon Supreme Court upheld a lower-court decision to release the documents as requested by media outlets.

?The court had discretion to order, on good cause shown, the release of those documents subject to the redaction of names set out in the exhibits to protect victims of child sexual abuse and reporters of child sexual abuse from embarrassment, retaliation or other harm,? the state Supreme Court said in its order. ?The court in this case properly exercised that authority.?

The media companies seeking the release of the files were The Associated Press, The Oregonian newspaper in Portland, Oregon Public Broadcasting, KGW (a CNN affiliate), The New York Times and Courthouse News Service.

Those media outlets intervened in a 2010 lawsuit in Oregon that resulted in the largest judgment against the Scouts in a molestation case.

That year, an Oregon jury found the Boy Scouts liable for the sexual abuse of a 12-year-old boy more than 25 years earlier, returning a verdict of $18.5 million in punitive damages and $1.4 million in actual damages.

The plaintiff, Kerry Lewis, then 38, allowed his name to be used publicly during the trial, according to his attorneys. He was among six men suing the Boy Scouts over allegations of sexual abuse.

Lewis? attorney, Clark, produced documents during the six-week trial that he said were part of an archive of previously secret Boy Scout files chronicling decades of abuse of boys.

Clark said that when his clients were boys during the 1980s, the Boy Scouts knew that at least one of them had been abused by a former assistant Scoutmaster. At the time of the 2010 trial, that former assistant Scoutmaster was a 53-year-old convicted sex offender released from prison in 2005 and paroled until 2013.

Clark also alleged that though the Scout leader was removed, he was allowed to stay on as a volunteer and the abuse continued. In 1983, the assistant Scoutmaster told troop leaders he abused 17 Scouts, according to plaintiff?s attorneys.

In its verdict, the jury held the Boy Scouts of America 60% negligent; the Cascade Pacific Council, which oversees Scouting activities in the region, 15% negligent; and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 25% negligent.

The church has sponsored a number of Boy Scout troops, including the one to which the plaintiff belonged. A lawyer representing the church said then that the verdict had no impact on the church, because it settled the case out of court more than a year earlier.

CNN?s Chuck Conder contributed to this report.

Pathology of Huntington's disease identified

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? A study led by researchers at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) provides novel insight into the impact that Huntington's disease has on the brain. The findings, published online in Neurology, pinpoint areas of the brain most affected by the disease and opens the door to examine why some people experience milder forms of the disease than others.

Richard Myers, PhD, professor of neurology at BUSM, is the study's lead/corresponding author. This study, which is the largest to date of brains specific to Huntington's disease, is the product of nearly 30 years of collaboration between the lead investigators at BUSM and their colleagues at the McLean Brain Tissue Resource Center, Massachusetts General Hospital and Columbia University.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited and fatal neurological disorder that typically is diagnosed when a person is approximately 40 years old. The gene responsible for the disease was identified in 1993, but the reason why certain neurons or brain cells die remains unknown.

The investigators examined 664 autopsy brain samples with HD that were donated to the McLean Brain Bank. They evaluated and scored more than 50 areas of the brain for the effects of HD on neurons and other brain cell types. This information was combined with a genetic study to characterize variations in the Huntington gene. They also gathered the clinical neurological information on the patients' age when HD symptoms presented and how long the patient survived with the disease.

Based on this analysis, the investigators discovered that HD primarily damages the brain in two areas. The striatum, which is located deep within the brain and is involved in motor control and involuntary movement, was the area most severely impacted by HD. The outer cortical regions, which are involved in cognitive function and thought processing, also showed damage from HD, but it was less severe than in the striatum.

The investigators identified extraordinary variation in the extent of cell death in different brain regions. For example, some individuals had extremely severe outer cortical degeneration while others appeared virtually normal. Also, the extent of involvement for these two regions was remarkably unrelated, where some people demonstrated heavy involvement in the striatum but very little involvement in the cortex, and vice versa.

"There are tremendous differences in how people with Huntington's disease are affected," Myers said. "Some people with the disease have more difficulty with motor control than with their cognitive function while others suffer more from cognitive disability than motor control issues."

When studying these differences, the investigators noted that the cell death in the striatum is heavily driven by the effects of variations in the Huntington gene itself, while effects on the cortex were minimally affected by the HD gene and are thus likely to be a consequence of other unidentified causes. Importantly, the study showed that some people with HD experienced remarkably less neuronal cell death than others.

"While there is just one genetic defect that causes Huntington's disease, the disease affects different parts of the brain in very different ways in different people," said Myers. "For the first time, we can measure these differences with a very fine level of detail and hopefully identify what is preventing brain cell death in some individuals with HD."

The investigators have initiated extensive studies into what genes and other factors are associated with the protection of neurons in HD, and they hope these protective factors will point to possible novel treatments.

The Way To Effective It Change Management

The software change management process is essential for every IT company. For progressive IT companies, software helps to automate a wide selection of business procedures. Any change that is made to the software is going to bring changes in the entire business process. For example, the manner in which an insurance company provides quotes for life insurance policies is efficiently encoded in the quote engine. Any involuntary changes to this quote might result in an unplanned modification to the type of quotes that a life insurance agency provides. Therefore, it is crucial that software changes are carefully monitored.

Why Change Management is important?
Without a proper software change management process in place IT companies will lack an in-depth understanding of the way software operation of production can automate business processes. This comprises effective change management to the software in production, development and any other alterations that are associated with artifacts such as requirement managements, test cases and so on.

Most decision makers and business entrepreneurs when interviewed have put emphasis on the benefits of software change management. The modern day business scenario has made entrepreneurs and business houses believe that they require this process for fulfilling increased demands from clients and end users.

Software needs can be predicted across the application life cycle. Hence, any unidentified alteration can make the application releases witness hassles and unfavorable circumstances. To be able to manage these situations efficiently, eminent service providers specializing in agile methodology have come up with innovative change management solutions that assists in managing and tracking changes appropriately.

Furthermore, the changes are also managed through a reactive impact analysis across the software development life cycle. Effective automated change management programs can be implemented for bringing down the scopes of risk consequences. The modern day change management solutions have been set up in a way that caters to the present day needs and are user friendly. Simultaneously, it acts as a repository for application life cycle modifications and efficiently links the same type of change items to change packages, results in a two-way requirements traceability matrix and functions in a process driven manner.

In this ever changing aggressive market scenario, with mergers and acquisitions increased proximity to customer via Web 2.0 technologies and social computing creates a great pressure for IT to provide software change management effectively and quickly.

ONLINE PARENTING COACH: My Child the "Drug Dealer"

What Parents Can Do About Drug Use and Drug Dealing?

1. Check your teen?s bedroom. Good places to look for marijuana: under mattresses, under dressers, under cabinets, attached to the back of the drawers, inside pockets of clothes and jeans the teen never wears.

2. Check your teen's attendance record at school. Is your teen skipping school to go get high? Does he leave early, arrive late, and sometimes not show up at all? Does he forge notes from his mom, or steal passes from the school office?

3. Check your teen's vehicle after a Friday or Saturday night. If they were smoking in their vehicle, you can usually smell a strange odor coming out of it. Check for small pieces of joints (green leaf-like particles or seeds on the floorboards or seats). Look for white pasty substances on CDs, CD cases, dashboards, pictures, or mirrors that they might be doing meth, crack, or cocaine off of.

4. Consider finding a therapist who specializes in adolescent substance abuse.? If your child won?t go, go yourself. An experienced therapist will be able to help you figure out how to approach your child and what you can do for him ? and for yourself.

5. Consider where they get their marijuana.? Teens usually start by getting their marijuana through their friends, eventually building up a network of dealers whom they meet at a convenient location. Some get their marijuana in parking lots (e.g., fast-food restaurants, superstores, gas stations, movie theaters, etc.).

6. Develop an open, strong and trusting relationship with your teen, one without judgment.? Don't get angry with what your teen comes to you and tells you, or the next time they won't share with you what's going on in their life. Give them advice and maybe they'll make a better choice in the future.

7. Don?t mistakenly pay for your teen's marijuana.? Parents often give their teen money to buy clothes or eat out, but the teen is saving that money to spend on marijuana. If you suspect your teen is using and/or dealing drugs, never give him cash.

8. Don't think your teen is too young to be exposed to marijuana.

9. Double check alarm systems. Even though parents may have an alarm system in their house, a teen is able to find a loophole to get out of the house past curfew time (e.g., fire escape ladder to get out a bedroom window and to the ground).

10. Figure out what you will and won?t do if your teen gets into legal trouble. Will you get a lawyer to help or is he on his own? Calmly tell your teen what those limits are ? and mean it. Then be prepared to follow through.

11. Find out who the other moms and dads are. It generally helps when moms and dads band together. There are probably at least a few of his friends with moms and dads who are as concerned as you are. Get together and brainstorm ways to get your adolescents busier with positive things.

12. Get your extended family to help in a positive way. Saving an adolescent is a family project. Can the grandparents take your teen along on weekend outings? Are any of his uncles doing something he?d like to learn?

13. Give your teen a random drug test. Make sure it's after a weekend.

14. Identify the things that are going well, however small. These are the things you can build on to develop better self-esteem and better communication. Does he come to dinner with the family? Laugh at a joke? Anything like this means that he is not totally disengaged from the family. Remember this to give yourself hope and encouragement. Compliment your teen whenever you can to strengthen the connection between you.

15. In spite of the turn of events, this is still your child. Try to find ways to put aside your anger, fear, and disappointment. Let your teen know that the reason you are angry and afraid is that you care deeply about him. Catch him being good as much as you can.

16. Know who your teen's friends are. If a teen won't bring their friends over to the house to hang out with their parents and get to know them a little better, they most likely have something to hide.

17. Let your teen know that you see through the bad behavior to the talented, smart child he once was ? and still is. He doesn?t have to meet some abstract standard of perfection or compete with anyone else for your love or attention. He is valued for who he is.

18. Lock your liquor cabinet.

19. Look closely at your teen. To cover up the physical signs that your teen is using marijuana, he might pull his hat down over his eyes, put gum in his mouth, and put Visine in his eyes to take away any redness. When he comes home, he may avoid conversation by giving his parents short yes or no answers. When drug use takes a toll, you may notice a rapid loss of weight, paleness of the skin, discoloration, dark circles under the eyes, shaky hands, dropping grades, more absences from school than you know about, sudden mood changes, and a rise in anger at family members.

20. Check their text messages, and look through their pockets, purses, wallets and backpacks. Ask for permission, but if they're mad that you're looking through their stuff, it may be because they have something to hide.

21. Make an appointment with a therapist for a comprehensive evaluation. Let your child know that sometimes people get involved with marijuana because there is something legitimate going on. You care enough about your teen to find out.

22. Remember that the most trusting parents are the ones who are the easiest to take advantage of.?

23. Remind your teen that it is a parent?s job to help their adolescents grow up physically healthy and emotionally strong and you intend to do your part. You don?t want your teen to go to jail, overdose and get sick, or die. You will therefore never get off his back about marijuana.

24. School guidance counselors have seen lots of adolescents like your child. They have also seen lots of moms and dads who have abdicated their responsibility for their adolescents. They don?t know that you are a concerned parent unless you tell them. There may be a drug abuse program connected to the school. If so, take advantage of what help is offered.

25. Try to get your teen involved with something he likes that will put him into a different group and take up his time in a positive way. He needs new ways to feel good about himself. Work behind the scenes and get someone else to call your teen with an offer or an idea.

The bottom line is this: Parents should step back and analyze what is really going on. Drug use and drug sales are a sign of a much deeper issue. Like most moms and dads, you?ve probably been dealing with the symptoms (e.g., hair, dress, curfews, contraband, etc.), not the deeper problems (e.g., feelings, peer pressures, family dynamics, addiction, etc.). You will be in a much better position to come up with solutions if you have a better idea of what the real problems are.

Afghans deny killer of 2 US troops was intel agent

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Afghanistan's security service denied claims that a suicide bomber who killed two American troops and four Afghans in a weekend attack was a member of the country's intelligence agency.

The remarks Tuesday contradict statements by U.S. and local officials who had described the assault as an insider attack and the first of its kind by a member of Afghanistan's elite intelligence service.

The growing number of insider attacks has raised doubts whether Afghan forces will be able to effectively control security in their country after foreign troops depart in 2014.

In the attack Saturday, the bomber blew himself up as a group of Americans and Afghan officials were arriving to deliver new office furniture to the intelligence headquarters in Kandahar's Maruf district. Two American troops and four Afghan intelligence agents died in the blast.

The NATO military coalition and local officials said the bomber was a member of Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security, or NDS.

"The attacker was wearing an NDS uniform, and was an NDS employee," coalition spokesman Maj. Adam Wojack said in an email.

But Shafiqullah Tahiri, spokesman for the intelligence agency, said Tuesday that the attacker had worn an Afghan uniform to gain access to the building in Kandahar.

"The suicide bomber was never on the staff of the NDS," he said. "Unfortunately, the local media reported this. It created concern among the people of Afghanistan."

Afghan authorities are increasingly sensitive to the spate of insider attacks on foreign troops and members of the Afghan army and police. The government has sought to play down the significance of these attacks, which have raised concerns about the level of Taliban infiltration in Afghanistan's security forces.

So far this year, more than 50 U.S. and NATO troops have died at the hands of their would-be Afghan partners. But Saturday's bombing was the first reported insider attack by an Afghan intelligence agent, according to logs kept by The Associated Press and the international military coalition.

This would raise the scope of insider attacks to a new level since members of the security agency are much more closely vetted than the Afghan army or police.

Although the coalition maintains that Taliban insurgents are responsible for only a minority of the insider attacks, it is already clear that the tactic ? virtually unknown in previous guerrilla wars ? has seriously undermined the confidence of Western nations in the Afghan government's ability to control the security situation after 2014.

It has also increased calls in allied nations for a possible speeded up withdrawal of forces. Earlier this week, the British government said thousands of its 9,500 troops will leave Afghanistan next year, a major reduction in the U.K. forces in the country.

During a visit Tuesday, the British foreign service officer for Afghanistan, Sayeeda Warsi, stressed that her country is not abandoning its Afghan ally but would remain one of Kabul's "biggest supporters" after the pullout.

"Our relationship with Afghanistan is not limited to combat troops," Warsi said. "Therefore, when our combat troops leave at the end of 2014, that relationship will continue on a whole series of levels which include support in terms of training for security forces."

In other guerrilla wars, insurgents have been known to plant agents among security forces mainly to glean intelligence on their plans and, to a lesser extent, obtain weapons, ammunition, medical and other supplies.

Historians say insider attacks were virtually unheard of during the U.S. involvement in Vietnam, the French war in Algeria, or the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s.

Meanwhile, NATO acknowledged that its forces may have accidentally killed three Afghan children on Sunday in Helmand province while targeting suspected insurgents laying roadside bombs.

The coalition expressed regret for the deaths and said its representatives would meet with family members to express condolences. Afghan media has reported that besides the three children, several insurgents were also killed in a NATO airstrike. But a NATO statement denied that close air support was involved in the incident.

Ancient Egypt City Aligned With Sun on King's Birthday

The Egyptian city of Alexandria, home to one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, may have been built to align with the rising sun on the day of Alexander the Great's birth, a new study finds.

The Macedonian king, who commanded an empire that stretched from Greece to Egypt to the Indus River in what is now India, founded the city of Alexandria in 331 B.C. The town would later become hugely prosperous, home to Cleopatra, the magnificent Royal Library of Alexandria and the 450-foot-tall (140 meters)?Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the wonders of the ancient world. Today, more than 4 million people live in modern Alexandria.

Ancient Alexandria was planned around a main east-west thoroughfare called Canopic Road, said Giulio?Magli, an archaeoastronomer at the Politecnico of Milan. A study of the ancient route reveals it is not laid out according to topography; for example, it doesn't run quite parallel to the coastline. But on the birthday of Alexander the Great, the rising sun of the fourth century rose "in almost perfect alignment with the road," Magli said.

The results, he added, could help researchers in the hunt for the elusive tomb of Alexander. Ancient texts hold that the king's body was placed in a gold casket in a gold sarcophagus, later replaced with glass. The tomb, located somewhere in Alexandria, has been lost for nearly 2,000 years. [8 Grisly Archaeological Discoveries]

Building by the stars

Magli and his colleague Luisa Ferro used computer software to simulate the sun's position in the fourth century B.C. (Because Earth's orbit isn't perfect, there is some variation in the sun's path through the sky over centuries.) Alexander the Great was born on July 20, 356 B.C. by the Julian calendar, which is slightly different than the modern, Gregorian calendar, because it does not have leap years to account for partial days in the Earth's orbit around the sun. On that day in the fourth century B.C., the researchers found, the sun rose at a spot less than half a degree off of the road's route.?

"With a slight displacement of the day, the phenomenon is still enjoyable in our times," Magli told LiveScience.

A second star would have added to the effect, Magli said. The "King's Star" Regulus, which is found on the head of the lion in the constellation Leo, also rose in near-perfect alignment with Canopic Road and became visible after a period of conjunction with the sun near July 20. Earth's orbit has changed enough that this Regulus phenomenon no longer happens, Magli said.

Sun as a symbol

Architecture-by-astronomy was common in the ancient world, Magli said. The Great Pyramid of Giza, for example, is aligned with amazing precision along the compass points, which would have required the use of the stars as reference points. The Egyptians, whom Alexander conquered, had long associated the sun god Ra with their pharaohs.

"Aligning the city [of Alexandria] to the sun in the day of birth of Alexander was a way to embody in the architectural project an explicit reference to his power," Magli said. The King's Star would have only added to the mystique, he said.

The researchers reported their work online Oct. 9 in the Oxford Journal of Archaeology. They are now examining other cities founded by Alexander and later rulers to see if the solar pattern holds. The hope, Magli said, is that an understanding of Alexandria's astronomical layout will give researchers a better idea of where Alexander's tomb might be.

American Heritage girls and boys win District 22-1A golf tournament

The Miami Herald

As golfers walked in to turn in their scorecards Monday at the Jacaranda Golf Course, they took a quick glance at the leaderboard.

The reaction was often the same, ?Wow.?

The cause of the awe was the score of 271 that the American Heritage boys? golf team shot to win the District 22-1A tournament. The tally broke a Broward County record for a team score in an 18-hole event.

American Heritage found out shortly after it had swept the event as the Patriots girls also secured the team title with a score of 289.

Robert Geibel led the boys by shooting an impressive 6-under-par 65, and teammates Kristian Caparros and Jorge Garcia each shot a 68. Tyler Strafaci shot a 70 and Matthew Mourin delivered a 74.

The Patriots enjoyed the victory but put it into perspective with a tough regional and state meet ahead over the next two weeks.

?It?s awesome because we all shot well as a team,? Geibel said. ?We feel super confident right now, but we know we can?t afford to let our intensity decrease any, and we have to keep our confidence up.?

University School?s Jordan Gumberg continued his solid season by leading the Suns to a runner-up finish with a 69. Cardinal Gibbons finished third. The top three teams advance to regionals.

Westminster Academy?s Steven LaMay (73), Calvary Christian?s Zachary Mendez (73) and Pine Crest?s Ryan Hager (74) were the three individual qualifiers.

?We feel like we really have a shot going on,? said Gumberg, the leader on a team that went 21-3 in dual meets this season. ?This is one of the strongest team we?ve had yet.?

Claudia DeAntonio won the individual girls? title after shooting a 70. Teammates Alejandra Merchan and Marisa Messana each followed with a 72 and Jamie Freedman and Andreina Merchan each shot a 75.

Pine Crest?s Sam Haubenstock shot a 75 to lead the runner-up Panthers. Westminster Academy?s Ashley Malinchak shot a 77 to qualify individually.

Report: Longview soldier committed suicide - Northwest - The ...

LONGVIEW, Wash. ? A 20-year-old soldier from Longview killed herself in Afghanistan last December as she served alone in a guard tower, where she was stationed despite a long history of mental-health issues that was not communicated to her supervisors, according to a new report.

An Army investigation determined that Spc. Mikayla Bragg's commanding officers were never told she had made an apparent previous suicide attempt while serving stateside in Fort Knox, even though officials at the Kentucky base knew of it, The Daily News of Longview reported ( http://is.gd/J1cvsi). The newspaper obtained the investigation report through a Freedom of Information Act request.

"I found out after her death she had been seen (at Fort Knox) for issues like this. Of course the information was never provided to her commander (in Afghanistan)," wrote one frustrated Army captain, whose name was redacted. "Real effective policy they have in place."

Among the findings were that her superiors weren't told she had spent 45 days in an Army hospital at Fort Knox for mental-health treatment just months before she deployed. She had been hospitalized after telling doctors she wanted to crash a car and injure herself.

They also didn't know she had weaned herself off her prescribed anti-anxiety medication to satisfy requirements to deploy. That was six months before she shot and killed herself while stationed alone in a guard tower on Dec. 21 at Forward Operating Base Salerno.

"It is my opinion that (Bragg) 'fell through the cracks' created by the lack of information sharing that had been repeatedly requested and denied," a brigade behavioral health officer stationed at Camp Salerno wrote to investigators.

Bragg's father, Steve Bragg of Longview, declined to comment on the findings.

The report highlights a persistent problem for the military: Suicides have risen alarmingly even as the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are winding down. Veterans groups and others have urged the military to do more to help soldiers who are struggling with long deployments, the stress of being away from home and pre-existing psychological trauma.

But it also portrays a young soldier determined to serve. Bragg, 20, enlisted in 2008 after graduating from Mark Morris High School. She volunteered at battalion fundraising events, referred herself to Fort Knox counselors when necessary, and, once she deployed, fit in immediately with a new group of soldiers.

The 135-page report, known as a 15-6 investigation, included written statements from Bragg's colleagues and commanders, mental-health counselors and Army officials at Fort Knox. All names except for Bragg's were blacked out in the report. Capt. Brett C. Shepard, an attorney with of the U.S. Army's Judge Advocate General Corps, signed it.

Bragg showed no indications she was having trouble in Afghanistan, according to Army interviews with nearly two dozen of her fellow soldiers. All said she was a good soldier, and she had been promoted twice to specialist while in Afghanistan. She completed the Army's suicide prevention training in November 2011 - mandatory for all soldiers - and attended additional classes designed to help intervene in other soldiers' suicide attempts, according to the report.

The report does not say if anyone would face discipline in relation to Bragg's death. The investigators made three recommendations:

-Mental-health providers stateside should share more information about high-risk soldiers with mental-health providers in war zones. Camp Salerno's behavioral health officer said she had been unable to get mental-health records for Bragg because of privacy laws.

-Commanders should develop better procedures to ensure personnel data is not lost while transferring soldiers between units.

-No soldier, regardless of gender, should be stationed in a guard tower alone.

In the report, Army investigators said commanders at Fort Knox failed to properly track Bragg as a "high-risk" soldier who could potentially hurt herself or others before she was cleared to deploy to Afghanistan. Her death may not have been prevented, but she may have been better able to cope if she continued counseling and other services while stationed overseas, the report said.
