The LU Operational Apprenticeship Scheme 2013 is a programme designed as an entry level position within London Underground. We are looking to develop the next generation of operational leaders and experts who are responsible for the day to day running of the train service on the Underground lines. Over the scheme a career will take shape that will develop strengths and explore potential.
The aim of the scheme is to address the under-representation of 16 to 18 year olds in LU operational roles. London Underground offers this apprenticeship opportunity to 16 to 18 year olds as those under the age of 18 cannot apply for any other operational roles in LU due to the nature of the work and the age restrictions on the required licenses. At the end of the scheme apprentices will, if available, move into an operational position within the LU Network (currently at CSA grade).
Key accountabilities
There will be a period of intensive development where all apprentices will work with a variety of operational colleagues throughout the organisation to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to progress in the operational area.
Apprentices will have exposure to a huge variety of systems and technology on stations and on trains.
Apprentices will become involved in the work of the organisation from their first day and will contribute to the running of the tube service.
Apprentices work a 35 hour week over 7 days, working a maximum of 7 hours per day. Apprentices who are under 18 will be expected to work a 7 hour shift which will start no earlier than 07:00 and end no later than 22:00. Apprentices who reach 18 or over during their time on the scheme will be expected to follow the same shift patterns as all operational members of staff, and will therefore be expected to work early in the morning, late at night and on some occasions overnight.
Because apprentices are operational members of staff, their work placements can be at any location on the London Underground network.
Operational work will include tasks such as reading signals, operating trains and operating signals. The scheme provides training in these areas.
Please note that apprentices are required to wear a uniform, which will be provided.
Skills, Knowledge, Experience
Age: The apprentice must meet the target age group for this training scheme which is between 16 and 18 years old on the start date of the scheme which is 23 September 2013.
Qualifications: The apprentice must have, or be able to achieve before end of August 2012, Two grade Bs and a C from Maths, English Language and Science at GCSE or equivalent. Science will only count for one of the required grades.
Communication: Clear communication is very important in this position as apprentices will need to pass on information accurately to members of the public and to their colleagues.
Customer focus: This apprenticeship will involve dealing with a wide variety of customers and it is essential that apprentices are able to work with and deliver a good service to, a variety of internal and external customers. These could be internal requests from colleagues within TfL, and queries from customers that use the transport system.
An awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion: It?s critical that apprentices are able to understand, respect and meet the needs of our diverse workforce and customers.
Collaboration: A large part of the role will involve working as part of a team. Apprentices will need to demonstrate how they can form good working relationships with all kinds of people.
Problem solving: Throughout training and work placements, apprentices will be given information which they will need to make sense of, and will need to make suggestions for how they can resolve any issues or problems.
Motivation: Apprentices need to show an enthusiasm for working in the LU Operational area and developing themselves in this role. They will need to continually demonstrate to colleagues their willingness to learn new skills.
Ability to learn: Throughout the two-year scheme, apprentices will need to be able to learn new skills and apply these to their work. They will also need to be proactive in developing themselves.
An awareness of safety: Because LU operates a working environment with numerous potential safety hazards, apprentices will need to be conscious of this and understand what they personally need to do should a safety situation arise.
Verbal and numeracy skills: Apprentices will need to be able to understand information that?s in both numerical and written form.
Ability to concentrate, follow information and use a train timetable: Apprentices need to demonstrate these abilities to progress in an operational role.
Please note: Experience is not necessary for this position, as this is a development scheme and we are looking for people with the potential to grow their skills and make a career in London Underground.
